It’s interesting how things evolve, isn’t it?
Back in 2004, after I left a 20-year career in the music business, I started my own business. I chose web design because it was an extension of what I did in the “biz” – it was creative, fun, and involved marketing in a way that business were just then beginning to explore.
It was just design then … html and php, primarily … and slow internet access. My clientele at the time was mostly music- and entertainment-related.
Over the years though, I added graphic design, SEO, Social Media Marketing, and Advertising and more! My clientele changed, too, growing away from music and entertainment to real estate and solopreneurs; and, in the past few years, my clients have become exceptionally famous authors and speakers and larger corporations.
What hasn’t changed is my commitment to helping my clients grow, helping them achieve their goals, and helping them express their vision in the world!
What is an “author platform?”
The author platform is just like it sounds … a platform from which you create and build your fan base in order to foster an environment in which your book(s) will have the best opportunity to become best-sellers!
As an author, your goal is to write a compelling book, fiction or non-fiction, with memorable characters / concepts, a nicely paced plot, and an impact-driven conclusion that leaves readers wanting more.
That creation process is difficult enough without having to figure out how to build a website, set up social profiles, figure out content delivery systems and email autoresponders, shopping carts, SSL, and book funnels; plus advertising and building an audience.
So, if you want to be a successful author you need to first build a team that’s focused on helping you get there!
Book-Funnel your way to success!
There’s a fantastic marketing technique that works incredibly well for non-fiction books in particular. It’s the book funnel.
You may have heard about sales funnels before; book funnels are the same thing. Its a sales and promotion process that takes a site visitor from a purchaser of one item to a purchaser of possibly multiple items.
How It Works
Step one is simple, get a person into the funnel. This typically means advertising and promoting your book as “free” …. I call it the FREE++ game. “Get my new book absolutely free, just pay shipping and handling.”
In the process of signing up to get their free book (this can be the print version or digital) you have acquired a name and email to add to your list. Upon selecting the Free++ offer, they are taken to what’s called a cross sell; for example, a workbook that goes with the first offer.
Next, whether they add the workbook to the shopping cart or not, they are taken to an upsell, this might be the audiobook version of your offer or it might be an on-line course that works in tandem with your offer.
Then, whether they add the upsell to the shopping cart or not, they are taken to another upsell – typically a big ticket offer – say, a three month one-on-one coaching program and more.
And .. we haven’t even gotten into downsells!
